Joāo de Brito paints in an impressionistic turn of the Century California artist style with influence from the great French Fauvists. Painting outdoors — a la prime and in his studio, Joāo travels extensively to be able to capture the atmosphere creating true emotion in his art.
Born in archipelago of the Azores, from childhood he was surrounded by unspoiled beauty of the islands and people in the art world. His creative development continued after immigrating to New England where he resided near the port cities of Boston & Newport, RI.
After moving to California to advance his studies, he stayed in the creative environment as an art director of publishing companies and later as an art director/marketing consultant at advertising agencies.
Joāo has studied both in Europe and in the US under internationally known artists. Drawn by the beauty of the California coast, Joāo now resides with his family on the Monterey Peninsula.
Joāo believes that art should produce both emotion and thought. While he believes the emotion of the artist or his temperament should be expressed. it should be controlled with thought, yet bold — “a painting should never stop living in the mind’s eye".
His art works are part of many public and private collections both in Europe and throughout the United States.
